This week, I offer the first in a short sermon series “Holy Recreation.” How may we renew ourselves this summer? One typical way, of course, is to travel. To explore a new city or country, or even a new setting within our local Bay Area. When we enter new surroundings, we often gain a fresh perspective. This Sunday, I’ll explore travel as pilgrimage. This sermon isn’t in the Popcorn Parable series, but I do want to recommend the movie “The Way” with Martin Sheen. As the summary suggests, “this is a modern-day odyssey – the soulful journey of a man who sets off on an epic journey, thinking he is utterly lost, only to keep bumping into surprise moments of community, companionship and inspiration that begin to steer his way.” That is a great description of pilgrimage… a sacred journey that is more about “the way” than the destination. As poet David Whyte writes… …[Pilgrimage] is the sense of having walked from far inside yourself…
… every step along the way, you carry the heart and the mind and the promise that first set you off and drew you on and that you were more marvelous in your simple wish to find a way
than the gilded roofs of any destination you could reach. * David Whyte from Pilgrim ©2012 Many Rivers Press What journey are you about to embark on? How about beginning your own personal odyssey this summer? Enjoy the journey along the way, with wonder and appreciation at each crossroad and encounter.
Blessings on the road,
Jan Rev. Jan Reynolds
