James Baldwin wrote, “I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will have to deal with their pain.” I don’t many of us would own our “hate,” but I know I sure can carry around resentments. What a miserable way to live. It is drinking poison hoping the other person will die. OK…maybe not die…but at least suffer like I am. “Cleaning house” for me has to involve throwing the resentments in the garbage where they belong. I cannot embrace Christmas and hold onto resentments at the same time, and I want Christmas!
