Pedal for Protein 2020!

It’s hard to believe that we are in our seventh year of the Pedal for Protein (P4P) fundraiser for Northern California food banks. As many of you know, this fundraiser directs funds to food banks for purchase of protein-rich foods. So often, donations to food banks are more carbohydrate based and lacking in needed protein.

We are in an unprecedented time of food insecurity. So many families are struggling to put food on the table, many families are visiting food banks for the first time. The need for quality donations to all food banks, large and small is at a level unseen.

The website for the Redwood Empire Food Bank has the following statistics:

The effect of COVID-19 on our numbers:

30,550 – Average number of households served per month since March 15, 2020.

196% – Average recipient increase compared to before the pandemic.

5,024,700 – The equivalent number of meals served since the start of COVID-19.

P4P has been recognized as a significant donor on the Redwood Empire Food Bank Website:

“Thanks to support from The Presbytery of the Redwoods’ Hunger Task Force, through its Pedal for Protein fundraiser, the Redwood Empire Food Bank is able to purchase and supply high-quality protein foods for low-income families, children and seniors facing hunger in our community. The nut butters, dairy products, legumes and lean meats provided thanks to this funding are giving our hungry neighbors nutritionally balanced meals that they would not otherwise be able to afford.”

The P4P participants come from multiple Presbyterian churches in the North Bay, including St Andrew. In prior years (i.e. Pre-Covid), participants would either ride on the 6-day ride (300-400 miles) or on the several one/two-day rides. Each participant pledged to raise funds from church family and friends. Each year $40,000 – $60,000 has been raised.

This year, in deference to Covid, P4P will be a “Homespin”. What this means is that everyone is encouraged to participate from your home base. Dust off your road bike, mountain bike, or stationary bike and ride! Ride as an individual or ride as a family, every mile counts.  We will be collectively accumulating miles ridden during the week of September 21-26.

In honor of Pastor Rich, Eileen and Dave Haflich have pledged to donate 10 cents for every mile that St Andrew participants ride!
Send your cumulative miles to Dave Haflich through the church office at [email protected].

We hope others in our congregation will step up and donate too, in Rich’s memory. It is our sincerest desire that St Andrew raise $4000+ again this year. Have fun, be safe and enjoy the time riding for P4P.
