Why does church membership matter?

Dear Friends,

This is an age where membership “isn’t a thing”. Except maybe with the gym or Costco.

Church membership doesn’t necessarily reflect the vitality, welcome, or impact of our congregation. God has placed many people in our midst who feel a sense of the abundant life that God intends for us because of our congregational ministry. Everyone is welcome and may participate in the life and worship of this church and receive its pastoral care and teaching!

But there are many benefits of formal membership, an ongoing commitment and involvement with people who love you unconditionally. Those members who have “thrown in their lot” with St. Andrew over many years can attest to this.

Membership at St. Andrew and in the Presbyterian Church is being commissioned and blessed to grow in your relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and to engage in an authentic life of ministry with your own unique gifts. Yes, we are all ministers, discovering our vocation in serving God and making this world better, together.

In this age of many valuable claims on our time and attention, membership in a church can be a way to narrow our focus on what deeply matters – our desire to grow in love of God, self and other human beings. Making a commitment to a group of people dedicated to these values provides direction and meaning to daily life. We recognize that we belong to one another and are supported in that belonging by the love of God.

This is a wonderful time to show your commitment to St. Andrew. When you are a member, you may soon vote to elect your new pastor!

If you or someone you know may be interested in becoming a member, please let me know. I’d love to invite you or them to learn more about the joy and privilege of membership at St. Andrew.

Love and Blessing,
Jan
