Quilt celebrating the four seasons – by St. Andrew member Karen Taylor!
I hear that many of you are enjoying the slower pace of this time, the way that we can now breathe between activities. We are appreciating the simple things, like gathering flowers from our gardens, planting vegetables, or sitting safely across from loved ones we haven’t seen in person for a while.
We are enjoying hobbies more. Some of us are making masks to share, others are knitting winter hats for our Romanian friends. Some of us are finally scanning and cataloguing old family photos. And of course, there are beautiful crafts such as quilting as we know our friend Karen Taylor has engaged in for years!
Yet, if we swing between equanimity/calm and anxiety/restlessness, that is to be expected. We ride a wave of feeling content and then feeling concerned about how our world and lives may be forever changed.
One of the main blessings of practicing our faith, is that we are assured that God’s Spirit is working within us and between us, even when we can’t see the outcome.
I want to share one of my favorite prayers, The Welcoming Prayer by Father Thomas Keating, that may give you some calm and perspective when you get jitters, worry, or feel anxiety. It is a prayer of acceptance. I’ve shared this before but am happy to share this new video version I’ve just discovered:
We’re riding this wave with one another and God, and may that knowledge give us much solace and inspiration.
Much love to you all during this time,
Rev. Jan Reynolds
The Welcoming Prayer (by Father Thomas Keating)
Welcome, welcome, welcome.
I welcome everything that comes to me today
because I know it’s for my healing.
I welcome all thoughts, feelings, emotions, persons,
situations, and conditions.
I let go of my desire for power and control.
I let go of my desire for affection, esteem,
approval and pleasure.
I let go of my desire for survival and security.
I let go of my desire to change any situation,
condition, person or myself.
I open to the love and presence of God and
God’s action within. Amen.
