Jeremiah 29: 7,11
Philippians 4:13

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we embark on a couple of Summer Worship “mini-series.”  We will share uplifting “Popcorn Parables” movie nights and worship services, with the overall theme of “Pulling Together.”  We start this week with the movie “Soul Surfer” starring Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and Carrie Underwood; it tells the true story of a teen surfer, Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm to a shark attack, but perseveres with the love of God, her family and community.  There are beautiful surfing scenes:  she’s one with the waves!  Next week, we will explore “Remember the Titans,” an outstanding football movie about pulling together under pressure, across divides.

And Tracy Walthard will dive into the story of teamwork in “Toy Story 2” on 8/11.  The other worship “mini-series” is entitled “Holy Recreation” – yes, that’s recreation as in fun and summer.  The word “Holy” means anything that is set apart from the ordinary, often an attribute of God. The Hebrew translation Qadosh literally means “to be set apart for a special purpose” as in the concept of Sabbath – a day or set of days set aside for rest.

So, this summer, I will explore a couple of Holy recreational themes – Travel as Pilgrimage (8/14) and The Nature of Water (8/28). Rev. Bob Conover will share his wisdom on 8/18.  This summer, I have the privilege to spend time with you in meetings, church social gatherings and in Worship, getting to know you as a congregation more over time.  St. Andrew is in good stead, so no worries!  I encourage you to fully enjoy your times of Sabbath…  taking every opportunity to recreate in God’s creation, with your families and friends.

That’s Holy work!
