1 John 4:19-21
1 John 2:9-11

Dear Friends,

Whew, it sure is tough sometimes to see our own part in an altercation or riff, maybe even harder with those we love most.  What unconscious prejudices and assumptions are we carrying that get in the way of our reconciliation and unity?   As 1 John 2:9-11 tells us, “whoever hates another is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness.”

Sometimes we just don’t know what we don’t know!  Our unexamined notions can lead to blindness and needless separation.  This week we’ll be looking back at a time when school segregation was relatively new, and perceived differences were tearing communities apart.  We will learn about the 1971 true story concerning TC Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and how its recently integrated football team pulled together to win the state championship.

In this very moving and inspiring story, team members (and their coaches) come to respect one another as individuals and rely on one another for their diverse strengths. Their love and loyalty for one another is contagious!  If these young men can cross seemingly intractable divides to meet one another in unconditional caring and support, surely we can give it our best shot when the opportunity arises.    Blessings,JanRev.
