Children's Cancer Community (formerly Sonoma Children's Cancer Foundation) is a 501(c)3 organization and a California nonprofit corporation dedicated to providing a support network of information, companionship, and hope for children diagnosed with cancer and their families in the North Bay area. Programs include support groups, information and resource referrals, fun activities, family assistance, cancer library, and Memorial Scholarships. There is never a charge for any service or program for the families.
It all started when Michelle Bertrand was diagnosed with leukemia at age 8. When she had become cancer free in her teen years, she wanted to help others going through the struggles cancer brings, not only in terms of health, but with relationships, school, daily activities and routines. With the help of Steve Webster she formed a support group for youths with cancer in June of 1997.
Starting initially with five families, CCC has subsequently attracted more than $700,000 to improve the life quality of young cancer victims, and by now has served more than 150 families in the Bay Area.
The group wants to include any youth residing in the North Bay area with cancer. Youth members play a big part in implementing the program and. it is not just a support group. It is friends meeting together with common backgrounds. Together they plan their outings, things to do and places to go.
“Our goal is to provide emotional and financial support for children with cancer and their family members. There is no other organization like ours in the Bay Area." Many parents comment. “We would have never gotten through this ordeal without your help."
"Together we can share our experiences...our hopes ...our fears. Together we can go places we want to go to and experience the FUN we don't want to miss out on. Together not only do we find support, but there are separate support groups for our parents and siblings as well."

AN UPDATE FROM THE CHILDREN'S CANCER GROUP
Knitting - Crocheting - Sewing
When St. Andrew Presbyterian Church celebrated the "Faith in Action" day on October 11, 2009, a group of men and women enjoyed the opportunity to be of service to the community with their crafting abilities. We have from that date on, kept the Children's Cancer Closet full and continue to do so. With the enthusiasm of the group, we are expanding our ministry to include the Sonoma County branch of the American Cancer Society, the Valley of the Moon Children's Center (on Highway #12), and the Sonoma Hospital New Born Center. We are also partnering with the Shoe Box ministry with small afghans.
For your information, Last month (June), 44 hats and 9 afghans went to the County American Cancer Society, 3 scarf & hat combinations plus 9 hats to VOM Children's Center, and 13 baby hats to Sonoma Valley Hospital Birth Center. Pretty exciting!!
Thanks to ALL of you who have so graciously filled our basket at the church with your works of art. We continue to meet on the third Monday of each month from 10 a.m. until noon at Ellen Black's home. Please join us.
Call Lynn Klingberg @ 939-9927 or Ellen Black @ 939-6105 for more information.
