On the Scene Reports
The 2004 St. Andrew El Salvador Mission
Day 9: Oct. 19th, 2004
The Finale
We arrived at the site at about 8:00 as usual and did a lot of finishing work: tightening bolts, hanging doors and general clean-up. About 10:30 people and children from the school started to arrive.
The sewing group brought down some of their finished projects.
Tables, chairs and even a sound system appeared. They set up the inside of the new building for a program! The guests of honor were our team. Buenos Aires Mayor, Antonia quieted everyone down and made a brief presentation of thanks to the group. Michael Irvine did a very fine job of interpreting for us. Then the Mayor of Armenia gave a short speech.
We were then presented with certificates from La Asociacion de Desarrollo Comunal El Futuro ADESCOFUT. This is an association for the future development of Buenos Aires.
We then signed an official book that made us members of this association. The past project members were also honored Guillermo Gonzalez, John Saguto, Leslie (Blankenship) Saguto, Lisa White, Gary Stein, Whitney Evans and Doug Webster. A certificate was also presented to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. After the official presentations, we were entertained with some dancing and singing from the older children of the community.
When it was all over, there was a lot of hugging, hand shaking and yes even a tear or two! This picture shows the women of our team and Beatrice, the sewing teacher.
Of course we couldnt pass up the chances to dance a little since we had the sound system. Kieran found this a lot of fun!
Leaving was very hard to do. A lot of friendships were renewed and new ones made. But there is so much more to do there, so we know that we as a church will keep these friendships going one way or another. Adios me amigos, iremos encontrarse de nuevo.
