Day 5: Oct. 15th, 2004

The building is going up! There are 20 panels that connect across and then are bolted to the slab. Concrete is poured in the trough that the panels sit in to stabilize the building. Very interesting construction. As you can see, there is considerable help from the community.

In the meant time, we took all the sewing machines, notions and fabric up to the classroom site. The kids helped bring everything up. All the students and teacher were absolutely delighted with all the things. Beatrice, the teacher (I misspelled her name before), was overwhelmed. There were books for the children, in English, but that didn’t seem to matter. Quilting books and magazines, patterns and fabric paints, yarn and laces. It was delightful watching their faces. In the afternoon class we asked “What would they like to learn?” Beatrice immediately went to a quilting book and turned to a simple quilt with triangles and squares. We demonstrated how to use the cutting mat, rotary cutter and how to convert from inches to millimeters. Then she started cutting the pieces. We gave a square to each student who sewed away, not perfectly for most, but they had several squares and rows done by the time we had to leave. We’ll have pictures of them for you tomorrow.
