What started as a personal journey has now become a church supported mission to Haiti. John and Michelle Donaldson had been talking about participating in some form of a mission trip for the last four years, waiting for the right opportunity to come along. After the earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Aimee Chagnon went to Haiti on a medical relief trip and then spoke at St. Andrew about her experience. After hearing her speak, John and Michelle felt led to pursue a trip to Haiti. Dr. Chagnon was instrumental in helping John & Michelle through the process and they were able to accompany her and Daniel Nichols on their next trip to Haiti in 2010. This group has been to Haiti twice already with another trip planned in May 2011.
The May trip will include taking soil samples for a sustainable gardening program that is being established with Ecology Action, a non-profit group in Mendocino County. There are also plans to coordinate with MedShare in the building of a new surgical center.
As the mission to Haiti expands at St. Andrew, additional members are committing time and resources to travel with the group in August adding more adults and at least two young adults from our youth group.
