Demographics
Vancouver is located in the southwest corner of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is bordered by the Burrard Inlet to the north and the Fraser River to the south. Vancouver’s population is an estimated 583,296. Tourists converge on this city year-round for a variety of activities—from whale-watching off the Pacific Coast to admiring the panoramic views from the peak of Grouse Mountain. Many more tourists will come to Vancouver in 2010 when this city hosts the Winter Olympic Games. Despite its spectacular beauty, the city still faces economic challenges. The child poverty rate is nearly 24 percent. There are 1,200 homeless individuals in Greater Vancouver, two-thirds of whom are struggling with health problems—primarily addictions. Illicit drug use is higher in British Columbia than all other provinces. Among Vancouver youths, nearly 70 percent have tried marijuana and one in four has tried cocaine. Your volunteer efforts will have a tremendous impact on Vancouver’s neediest residents. Come and be a part of the solution to some of this city’s greatest challenges.
About the Ministry
Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students may spend all week at one service site or switch between sites during the week. Our goal in partnering with local service organizations and programs is to address the very basic needs of residents. Students may serve at places like: Children’s Programs, Elderly Centers, Soup Kitchens/Homeless Shelters and Thrift Stores.
